Yay for Gary Oldman! I don’t think he will win, though. Early indications seem to be pointing to George Clooney. What is it about movies with sad-sack male protagonists? (Alexander Payne, I love you, but maybe it’s time to mix it up a little, don’t you think? Maybe a movie about a woman, next? Don’t worry, you can make her sad and pathetic too.) And thank heavens Viola Davis is nominated for the Best Actress category rather than Best Supporting Actress. It’s also great that both Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain are nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Help, since they are both really great in the movie (anytime the story focuses on Skeeter and her mom or Skeeter and her boyfriend, or Skeeter and her Junior League friends, I kept wishing we’re back watching Minny and Celia instead), but the split-vote will probably mean neither of them will win. Nick Nolte for Best Supporting Actor for his part in Warrior?? That was a fun movie (go Tom Hardy!) but hardly award material. I was hoping for Best Supporting Actor nod for at least one of the hot British thesp in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (maybe Mark Strong), but no such luck.
